The natural lake was expanded by the creation of the Jackson Lake Dam, which was originally built in 1911, expanded in 1916, and rebuilt in 1989. The formation of the lake is associated with the activity of the glacier. The Snake River flows through the lake. It is about 24 km long and 11 km wide. The area of the lake is 103.4 km².
